Crap

Dave W (And D Bentick)
(didn't recognise the e-mail you used so incase you don't get the reply...)

Thanks for the Design Document text I'll start inputting it in the morning.

Not so smooth with the keying... keylight installed without a hitch so I have that now... opened the AE file... no footage in it.

.aep's work like .AI or .Indd files with linked assets so in the after effects file I just get a big block of placeholder colours where the footage should be in the comp as that's not on the disc. Doh!

I can't think of a solution unless you remember what you put in my .aep file and have the footage to put on a disc with it aswell tomorrow, or if you have the resource to temporarily upload it anywhere? though I assume the footage filesize is about the size of russia.
Otherwise it's up to you and Dave and if there's still work left to do I can grab it off dave B on friday at the meeting.
cheers, matt

*sulking cos I wanted to play with keylight* :/

Credits motion test 1 (2)

More on the blog, I'm wondering if those illustrations (desaturated and levelled to brown linework) below could be used as subtle changing textures in the background while the credits roll through, might be nice and show some process within the finished product.

Design Document

Dave what do you reckon to something like this for the master layout? The initial pages can be adapted to include more text on one side then maybe a few illustrations down the side. Ignore the comment about the portrait format last night, layout ufolded itself thismorning.

I think what would be best is if you e-mail me everything that needs to go in it (even if it's at intervals) rather than you try and figure out how I'm working in InDesign. Just Word .docs for the text clearly labeled with page number and heading you want it under and the same for images, I assume they'll all be on here or flickr somewhere so just copy the urls into the document so I can source them.

I was going to treat the header type with some texture like the current 'logo' but for the time it would take and loss of editablity within the doc then it would probably be form over function.

Just took another screengrab with the header fixed (kind of, the red strip needs resizing I know) and with some placeholder images to get a better idea of how it looks. Is roughly 2 images per section ok? Exceptions can obviously be worked into it when I have the content. Maybe page numbers in bottom right incase anyone prints it. I'll line the texture up in the background so the crease is in the centre too and tighten up the typography.
Like I say, bit cryptic when all I have to go on is headers so might totally change when the info comes rolling in.

For the asset list can you send me the table (whatever you made it in, excel? Or just word? I have both anyway) I assume you can drop tables into ID somehow, or export the table as an image.

I also have no clue what the quick reference list would be, another table?

My Dad knows you're leaving the greenscreen CD with him, when you have your meeting with Dave Bentick can you try installing keylight into your AE and make sure it works. Despite the scale of some of my previous pirate adventures, ahem, I can't find the plugin anywhere so I need the plug and the serial/keygen on the CD.

*Edit

Just done a few tweaks to the layout to balance it out a bit... Also there's a quick motion test for the credits on my blog. It's nowhere near yet, a few ideas I had didn't really add anything, less is more...

anyway, layout:

I'm enjoying me self, sweet!

Looking good, aint got alot to say, so Ill just press on.
Any question you have for me feel free to ask.

More progress made

More progression has been made on the 3d side of things , i am doing the top of the building and my room again as i had errors with my room. So i am re editing it , so far i am progressing with the windows and such applying some of the requested textures to the model , i also mocked up the roof top with some scenery just for show to see what people thought of the scenery layout , i know its an early stage for mock ups of the assets but i did it just to see what it would look like.

It will be heavily illustrated. If you design a layout with those sections I'll sort out the content on Monday. It will be a PDF.

Decayed Signs and posters

Just grunged up anything relevant I could find from last year and knocked up a couple of new ones from old elements (like this one). Stas if you want to grab them off my blog for the scene.

If any more are needed just give me some examples of types of shops you want and I'll knock some type based signs up

*Edit - Some research and development screens regarding end credits now on my blog.

Result

"Hello Matt. Of course you can use the poem. I'm glad that you asked though.

I hope your videos come out well, you all do the best of your abilities,
and you get a good grade on your project.
If possible would there be a way you could show me the project after
its all over and handed in and all?

Good Luck!

- Casey "EastPhilly" Kandel (APK)"

Poem

Just e-mailed that guy(?) about the poem asking permission to use it in exchange for credit and world fame haha, hopefully he'll respond favourably. I've lost count of how many parkour websites I've had to register with now, I'll be getting invited to the christmas party!

Did everyone who needed them get the texture photos?

Dave W is this info document basically just to present all the concept art, diagrams, photos, screengrabs so far? Might be best if you do a quick list of everything that needs to be enclosed so I have an idea of where to start, e.g if it should be in any sections or subheadings?

I talked to Stu about his MA project and that seems simple enough, I'll be able to do something nice for that I think. Hopefully he'll throw in a copy for my portfolio seeing as he's getting cheap labour, not as cheap as you mind ;)

Dave Bentick just had a quick mooch for keylight for mac but no luck so you'll have to put the plugin and key on the CD for us if that's ok? Gonna watch some tuorials to swot up before I get the footage on monday.

Stas I'll have a look through my folders for any signs or logos and post the images on my blog over the weekend, I designed an eastern brush/western blackletter fusion type font during the last term so I'll make a new one from that too.

I think that's it, good luck with the workload everyone

Dereliction Before and After

Shots of Photoshop work looking at main central feature of final Fin Shot

First stills from composition chroma keying

OK, There are a few issues with the footage, however Im really pleased with the way this turned out.
Ive also had to learn more techniques to achieve a decent key in after effects.
This scene was very slow and difficult to achieve, but it can be done just need a little patience.
Even thought it looks good, theres still some tweaking to be done.
got shut of the lights.

enjoy!

the blogs looking good by the way.

Narrative visual and spatial reference

For everyones' reference I've put together a visual and spatial path through the main building to show where the different scenes take place. This hopefully will help everyone visualise how the storyboard actions flows around the building.

I'll add another diagram to show the end scene soon.

At the risk of breaking blogspot...

...Another quick title video update:

I've done a quick test of how the/a poem could be implemented to set the scene before the film starts, I've kept the texture but desaturated it to separate the 2 parts and build tension

oh by the way, my crb clearance form came today, so I can work with the lads... (oh wait, filming's all but finished, ha.)

Building shape & scale guide

For scale and rough shape reference use the following images as a guide.

The secondary building on the left is 14 storeys high. Each floor is 4m and the total height is 56m. Think contemporary London office buildings like the Gerkin for how the glass on the front could look. This is a glass building.

The main building is 28 storeys high and is like a New York early-Twentieth century skyscraper without a pinnacle top. It is flat roofed. The corners are stepped out and there are a variety of flat roofs on each level. Each floor is 4m and the total height is 112m.

The shapes are just a suggestion. Improvise on the theme.

Parkour Poem

Sorry to keep posting random crap, I'm at home waiting for a client to send me info for a proper job so I'm trying to fill my time with possibly useful stuff...

Just found this on a parkour forum, it is someone's signature.
I think something short and simple like this would be perfect for an introduction, not too verbose but it gives an insight as to why traceurs practice what they do and almost like a uniting mission statement/maxim. If we want something like this perhaps between us we could come up with something similar though I'm not sure it should be altered for the sake of it; and I might be better e-mailing the author and asking for the right to use it and credit them? The only line I'm not so keen on is the scars part because from what I've read you shouldn't really be putting your body through things it can't handle and getting injured?

"The World. My Playground.

The Streets. My Home.
The Architecture. My Inspiration.
The Fear. My Motivation.
The Sweat, the Scars, the Pain. My Proof.
My Name. Traceur."

Slow Motion Skating/Explosions

Just remembered I forgot to post this, whether it's useful or not I don't know, but it is very cool. Has that kind of desaturated grungy city feel running through it and some great CG explosions and dust...

Titles motion test 2

Titles

I've been experimenting with my initial development with regards to the title sequence. More explanation on my blog.

I know the titles and credits will only be discussed as a group later on but I want to keep experimenting with this so I have a clear head of what I can technically do and tighten up possible compositions and sequences to make things easier in a month or so. I still like the idea of having a type based introduction to parkour to explain the video, even it is fairly cryptic/poetic. This would obviously lengthen the titles somewhat and determine if I treat it as such or just as a 5-10 second sting/logo. Also we need to determine what text from the credits needs to be at the beginning (cast, director, production?) but like I said that's for another time.

Textures

I'm going to manchester at about 6am tomorrow to try and get some city shots before it gets too manic, then off to salford and outskirts to try and get more grimey textures. I am concerned that because a lot of the scenes are indoors and as I don't know of any derelict houses round mine I won't be able to provide the whole set of textures from the pics tomorrow, but with some photoshop layering perhaps we can produce original images for the interiors once we know exactly what textures we need for the assets. Alternatively I found a few more free grungy texture sites yesterday that will help (on the pc not my mac, I'll post them a bit later)

Revised Storyboard

Just thought I'd best show the additions of mood I've added to the storyboard so everyone can keep up to speed were we're up to:

Hallway reference suggestion

Using the corridor image I sourced as visual reference, this is how the POV corridor digital shot could look. The footage of the lads running may be shot as a pick up early July.

Concept skies

Yo,

I thought I'd show some basic sky concepts. I'm engaging Jose Flores to work on the sky animations. A very talented student, currently he is working in the Brighton Sony Computer Entertainment office so he will be working remotely. I've just put these together to help him visualise what the skies will be like. They are based upon the concept paintings that Dave Ball sourced. The redness is not right yet but it is enough for him to work on. I am emailing him a revised storyboard where I have added the skies to the sketches.
