Great developments!

Hi all,

Some ace developments, love the infinity design. Just had a couple of questions one being, do we still need extra time with the lads? Only three weeks left of term now and would need to plan when we could go out. Also do you want a title from us because I can get that sorted this week? Dave and Jenny what are you gaming references (if thats the right phrase!) as I am writing the statement for the Biennial also this week. I will post it up here before I send it though so feel free to comment.

New inFINity neon

Great font which realy adds to the 3D process and Effects.

Meteor test

Here a quick video i've put together with the test render's of the meteor I'e done. This a new one since I've been unable to find the old version.

Enlarged inFINity image

Here is a an enlarged and to scale image, Have added green screen background. Might be slightly of colour from volume lighting.

Great minds!

Hi Matt,

Great minds think somewhat alike!

Here's is Stas' test rendition of the sign.

I'll get a anamorphic 16:9 shot of it and chromaDave can use it as a test for the final scenes.

inFINity

Quick mock up of what the sign at the end might look like, obviously the 3D version will have some nice extrusions and texture rather than my rubbish wacom sketching and image stretching - see my blog for more interesting/boring stuff related to the typography and the flat illustrator image.

Scoring

Hi Jo,

Thinking about the score for the film. I was sourcing a student who is a musician to discuss the score. So far he's not been in touch.

Alternatively you are a mate of Tom from Music Tech and the Hotpots fame. He's rather handy musically. What do you think about engaging his help?

Just a thought.

PS I have receipts for Dave and Jenny's rail travel from last Monday to get to you. I've emailed you my address. Reply with your address and I'll get it to you.

re: scene tasks

Yes thats fine by me. I'm only going to manchester/salford on thursday because it fits in with something else but I'll try to get to liverpool earlier in the week and make a start, there'll be more variety then too. I've just remembered there's a 'manchester eye' type ferris wheel near urbis so can get some good arial shots from that if it's still there (assuming it's considerably cheaper than the london eye to go on!)

I think if anyone who needs the textures (just dave will do at the moment I suppose then share it from there) can bring in either a laptop or a large pen drive to grab the photos off me on friday that would be easier than me trying to find hosting and time to upload so many large images.

In the mean time I'll start sketching out some ideas and playing with type for signwriterStas' sign :)

First main scene tasks

Just to quickly confirm what was discussed at the really energetic and highly creative production meeting on Friday.

We are to concentrate this week on nailing the elements for the storyboard panels 12-16 for Friday.

Dave Bentick (aka chromaDave) is to composite the footage for these scenes together to make a clear action sequence. He is to use Dave Ball's concept model below to help composite the lads jumping through the window. (chromaDave don't worry about resizing the image, it's just a test).

Note: chromaDave can we arrange a meeting on Tues/Wed the work-in-progress, just so I can discuss the composition of the lads with you? Can you concentrate on getting the lads composited together within each type of shot (close up, medium, wide) and from each angle for that meeting? Also you left your monitor adapter in C431 last Friday.

Dave Ball & Shaun to concentrate on building basic models for all the assets we discussed, but concentrating upon the flat roof with windows and interior of room. If you get all those fleshed out before Friday, please then attempt the rest of the asset list.

Jenny Hope you're feeling better? Can you concentrate on the meteor sequence following the animatic (see post below) for Friday. The test you did a while back looks good and certainly is near what we need.

Matt you know what type of textures we are looking for so you know what you're doing. If you can stay a bit later after the next meeting then we can talk about the more graphic design based areas of the project.

The next production meeting is at 11:30 on Friday. Last week's ran to 2 hours and we were still going. It would be beneficial if everyone could keep a flexible afternoon in case things do go on. Would this be problematic? Feedback to me so I can gauge our time together.

I'd like to welcome Shaun to the team. He hit the ground running and came up with some great suggestions on Friday! Lovely stuff.

I won't be in work until Tuesday as I am in Edinburgh for a PhD meeting at Edinburgh College of Art. All summer Stas and I will be based in C431. That's it for now, I will have web access so I'll keep checking the blog.

Green Screen Footage (Rough Cut/Not Composited)

Hi all,

Here is the best footage of the green screen day edited into a rough narrative order by our star vid-guy Adam. The panel numbers refer to the storyboard.

Green Screen rushes 16/6/08
@ 10 mins total (may take time to buffer)

The footage is now with our star chroma-guy Dave to do a rough composite to show how the action will look.

Just for context here is the rough animatic of the storyboard to make sense of the above footage.

Animatic (silent)
@ 2 mins total

Jo We may need to do some pick ups in a week or so to plug some narrative gaps (just running, stepping, standing etc.). I am sure we can use ICDC's green screen facility for these which will be free. Would the lads be available? Could you upload a photo of the lads in line just to record their clothes for continuity?

Our star-environmental team Dave and Jenny have a list of asset scenes that need building and our graphics star Matt has been out photographing buildings for reference to use in the city scape.

As for the star field for our meteor (get my constant referencing to stars now?) I have an idea to co-opt Jose Flores in to work on the opening scene. I am reserving that decision for after Friday's production meeting.

That's all for now until Friday.

Wednesday Footage Pickup

Hi chromaDave, 3DJenny and 3DDave,

I'll be freer in the afternoon tomorrow from 2:30 onwards until 6:00pm. Adam and me are cutting the green screen footage together and will only be finalizing that tomorrow morning.

What I propose is to show this at Friday's production meeting for discussion.

What would be ideal (but I don't know if possible) is if chromaDave could do a quick composite test of each individual lad's shots together in each scene for Friday? This would still be against the green. What do you think chromaDave? It would make better viewing if it is possible to have all the figures together. (Yes I know I'm a bastard)

To do this I reckon its best if I meet up with Dave Bentick at 2:30 to give him the footage (ok with you Dave?).

Then maybe Jenny and Dave about 3:30? I'll give you instead an assets list of the models we initially need and then the footage on Friday. In it's current state it is too confusing to be useful to model against.

Is that ok with you all. Let me know if there is a problem with the times.

I'll also be able to refund your travel costs tomorrow on receipt of either your outward or return rail ticket.

Cheers

story board

Hi Dave,

Stan dropped off the lads storyboard today and Tom showed him your office so you should find it on your desk. It gives the essence of the story but maybe doesnt break down the moves as much as it should. I will meet with them tomorrow (thur) and clarify the order of moves so that may help you further on Friday. The props we will bring then will more than likely be the horse, crash mats, perhaps a table. We will give ropes a miss then if its not practical in the time slot. Thanks for sourcing the green cloth that makes life so much easier. I have emailed Lee but have had no reply so we could sort all the finance side of things out on monday. Thanks, byeeee....

Green (Screen) Day

Hi Jo & Adam (& Stan),

I have just done a recce at Toxteth TV for next Monday. There is secure car park access which needs a fob. Chantelle at Toxteth TV can let you in from 8:45am. There is rear access to the TV studio. Here is a map from their website.

www.toxteth.tv/find.php

Update: I have bought this chroma key green muslin from backdropsource for £45 (sale price) to wrap around any props or people for Monday.

New blog format and header

Hi all & Matt,

I've added Matt's blog header to the blog to begin the conceptualizing of the project. To do so I've changed the blog layout too to accomodate the new desaturated palette.

Matt this is version 4 of the header can you email V.5 and I'll add that.

Some more concept images

Can everyone who wants access to my blog please send me an email at froj2002@hotmail.com. Because I now have so much copyright material and pictures of the lads on it I've made it private so I'll have to invite anyone who wants to look from now on. I got an e-mail the other day (sorted now) because I hadn't credited one of the research images on my blog so I need to cover myself.

These images are from gettyimages.com, it's a stock photo/video/music site which states I'm allowed to use the low res images for comping/concept. I grabbed a load of similar photos of interior and exteriors that may be of use to anyone modeling and texturing (while I remember, some cool free grunge/texture sites:

http://urbandirty.com/
http://www.cgtextures.com/

Anyway, onto the images. I think these are more effective in most areas than the first lot but as references for atmosphere and mood I think the first ones are more successful. In any case, one thing Dave and I both noticed was a lot of the images of post apocalyptic scenes were very desaturated which adds to the bleak mood, and as an added bonus it makes things much much easier to comp together in photoshop and I assume any other software as you don't have to worry so much about colour sitting together, just the light and dark tones really.

-Matt

Video Dimensions

The video dimensions are anamorphic 1080x1920. (Adam can you confirm this?)

Green screen to do list

Hi Jo,

Cheers for the storyline. We have just had our meeting (which I'll post seperately) and are fired up with ideas on what we can realise for the lads.

In the meantime some things for you guys to do for Monday:

  • Jump safety - Can Dave Ball arrange some time with the lads to review some safety tips before next Monday. It can be after school (Dave can you post when you can be available?)
  • Clothes - on Monday can the lads ensure they wear nothing with green in it
  • Mats - you're sourcing these
  • Props - I'm going back to Toxteth Tv tomorrow afternoon to recce what props they have and to gain the green paint colour. What are the chances of borrowing a gym vaulting horse that we could wrap in green cloth? Any props the lads bring will need to be sturdy and safe, painted, and dry for Monday
  • Travel - can my students get reimbursed for their travel on Monday?
  • Monday start - We need to be in for 9:00am on Monday so we can get everthing set up as quickly as we can. Will this be a problem for the lads?

I think that is all for now. I'll post the summary of the production meeting later.

Some concept images

Apologies I won't be able to attend today but I'll see you all on friday, what time?

Anyway...
Dave asked me to comp together some concept images that may be of use when storyboarding and planning the environment.

I need to retrace my steps and find the copyrights for the original images (just off google for now), some sit better with the photos than others (the longer shots) and in terms of physics and lighting are well off but the idea was just to try and create a few different moods.

Header version... (I forget which number we're on, 5?)

Dave mentioned the photo in the last one didn't scream parkour so this side on vault photo is more suited I reckon. Dave don't forget to check the 'customise' options on your blog and see what dimensions it needs, mine says it will downscale to 660 wide but the main one is wider.

The narrative sounds good, very exciting, sounds like dave and jenny are in for a challenge haha. I'm trying to find some stock comp images of indoor decayed environments to do some concepts that might be a bit more like the story but not having much joy for some reason, if anyone finds any either link me, post them here or upload them to the flickr account.

Cheers, matt

Lads' Narrative Idea

Hi,

We will have the storyboard idea and plan to you tomorrow for definite, but here is a rough outline of the story (still to be refined). The lads are very keen on Dave's suggestion but there are slight alterations.

Narrative

Using real film footage the lads are playing tag, doing their moves etc around the outside of a building and then they reach the roof. (fire escape type environments, run down, derelict buildings...) Matt is the master figure and the others students. They all stop as the sky starts to darken and they realise a comet is heading straight for them, it hits the building and they fall inwards through the roof. This is where it switches to a virtual environment. They are falling through floors with debris flying everywhere, occasionally glimpses of the firey sky show through the cracks. Matt manages to tic tac off a wall into a room, the students attempt this but end up grabbing a rope instead and fall into the room. Immeadiately they start to run as the walls are crumbling, they jump over obstacles. They get onto another floor, the master is cautious but the students bound into the space- tic tacing etc, they run to the edge and stop suddenly as there is a big drop down now that the building has fallen away. The camera pans down highlighting the big drop, they are shocked for a moment but then continue to run - want to find a way out. As the building starts to burn they are running from the flames which causes them to make a jump out of a huge window to a big drop below. The sky is burning and bright, smake and dereliction all around. The jumps could be in slow motion. They all get up and walk off with the master in front.

Unfortunately I can't make the meeting this afternoon as I have teaching commitments but if you have any questions I will try to check this blog and reply or you could ring the school and I will take the call.

Hope the story is ok it will adapt and be extended once the lads provide an updated version tomorrow and we welcome your views and advice. Thanks...

Wednesday, 4 June 2008

Update, as of 4th June

Hi all,

I have now confirmed with Toxteth TV our green screen booking for Monday 16th. So this gives us one locked off production milestone we need to meet. I agree we need at least a St Helens team meeting. I suggest Monday 10th at 1:30 in C431. I'm in assessment boards after that on Tues, Wed and Thurs. It would also be a good time for Dave Bentick to meet you all, I will be meeting him at 12:30 and it would make sense to get him involved straight away. Jo, if you're free then feel free to come along.

The kids are staying late tonight behind at school to work on the story. I've asked for the story to be with us by Wednesday at the latest (Monday at the best) for us to storyboard and list the shots we will need. Adam and I will storyboard the shots. I think we will also need a final production meeting with us all on Friday 13th (I'm not superstitious) to finalise everything for the 16th.

To put everyone's mind at rest as to what we can achieve as a final result: I have asked Jo to allow the kids to use their imaginations as to what they want in writing the story. Filming of this in its entirety will most likely be problematic. The more detailed their story idea is will give us an opportunity to film the parts that will work on screen, using the facilities we have, in the time available. The end result may be a short film 2-3 minutes or an extended trailer (30sec-1min) highlighting the best bits of the story. We can't make that decision until we see the story.

I'll be freer on Friday from assessing if, Matt, you want to come in and we can have a design meeting?

How is everyone (St Helens crew) fixed for a meeting on Monday?

Meeting?

May be useful to have another meeting to finalise all the narrative & environment plans before shooting so everyone knows what's going on? Maybe shoot some footage and photos outside at different locations (this can obviously be done at a later date but if everyone's getting together anyway it might kill 2 birds).
Obviously depends how busy everyone is and everything can probably just be posted on here (story boards scanned/photographed?).

Just a thought for shooting... any access to a high speed camera? That'd be cool having slow motion bits, theres a vid shot at 120fps on my blog that's quite nice. I've also just watched a skating video intro done in super slow motion with really impressive CG explosions that's really cool (not really practical for our timescale though).

I'm currently just planning ideas for the title sequence, it'd be helpful if I could get an idea of what info would need to be displayed e.g do we want any actor credits/school project titles etc. at the beginning or jut at the end? and if someone in the know *dave b ;)* could write a nice concise background/intro of Parkour (not just copy & pasted for obvious reasons) and maybe something a bit flowery like that poem I posted?
Just need to get an idea of the length really so I can start developing it properly.

Dave w do you want me to e-mail you the header? Might not be perfect yet but those green squares are rubbish :)

-matt

Tuesday, 3 June 2008

The 16th it is then.

Hi Jo,

That's great, can we get the story by Wednesday at the latest? Monday at the best :-) . From the kids story and storyboards Adam and I will work out what shots we need for the green screen, and what can be achieved.

Do we need another production meeting before the 16th?

From the kids storyboard they will need to source the props. Obviously they need to be stable, transportable but also painted green. I'll ask Lee for a paint reference. Can you organize that bit?

If I book the green screen at Toxteth TV and then tell them to invoice you? Who would they be charging? Give me a ring when you can so we can sort out what's best.

Cheers

Dave

Actually...

School have just said that the 16th is best as there is so much going on. I hope this is ok for everyone, I will need to know asap if this is no good.

Meeting with the lads tomorrow to begin storyboarding ready to send to you next week.

green screen dates

Hi,

Just checked over dates with school and I think the best ones would be 16th or 18th of June. Are these any good? There are Year10 exams on the others and then work experience the following weeks, theres alot happening at the mo!

Green screen dates

Hi Adam,

Jo has given these three dates for the green screen:

Mon 16th June/ Tue 17th June/ Wed 25th

Are you free on any of them? We need to book the facility ASAP.

Cheers

*update* Adam is going to get back to me to confirm Mon 16th June. If this is to be the date then we will need to have the story before then and storyboarded so we can get the shots we need. What do you think Jo? I've rang Lee from Toxteth TV to provisionally book it. As soon as I get the green light I will confirm with them.

3 Daves are better than 1 :O

These where just two of the shots that i got and photoshopped alittle in my level just to show what footage you`ll be getting from my level , i am uploading them to my FTP soon so that it will be easier to access them.

As for putting the narative idea up again seperate so its easier to read here it is again..

The Narative

The film starts with all the kids on the roof top of a building , over looking the wasteland/post apocolyptic place we talked about before , one of the Kids obviously being the Master is stood slightly to the right of them all to make sure the difference between them is clear. Suddenly they look around and parts of the roof begin to collapse around them , from then on they are in a deadly race following the Master following in down the building as quick as they can , obviously pulling off style moves , jumping through holes in the floors , over bits of rubble and such as the building is giving way , glass shattering all over the place , and alot of stuff going on , in these sequences , the tag element could be added to show that the apprentices are still having a laugh with each other , as most apprentice and master storys normally have the learner doing stupid things and being told off at the end or something , this could be shown by them using the tag element inside as the building collapses they are messing around whilst following the leader playing style move tag as they avoid stuff , so it becomes a deadly game of tag and a race for survival inside the building.

Eventually they reach ground level , and run down the street , and then when a safe enough distance away the Master clips one of the others round the back of the head to indicate that their deadly game of tag was not the best idea , again like in most storys like this , the trainee gets punished for being reckless and irrisponsible.

I had some feed back from everyone really apart from the lads obviously , the reason i came up with this idea is that it was something that myself and Jen could manage in that allocated time frame , because then we would just have to model a small section of an urban area rather than a huge expansive landscape thats for ever changing, that and because the narative idea fitted it easy and seems a great idea to go with , i only hope the lads like it too.

My Personal Concerns

On the other hand i do have personal concerns about the lads free running abilitys , in the practice they had no kinda organisation with in their group as to how to do things safely , and personally i think i need to go over with them how to do some things again , i know this may seem offensive to the lads , but there where alot of times in that session where there could have been a really nasty landing which could have ended up with a broken ankle and worse , so if possible i would like to arrange with Jo and who ever else to bring them back to go over some stuff , as i think its important that it is covered.

Filming against screens

On a final note , i am not sure weather you want me around for the filming Dave , but i am sure it would be a good idea just for safety reasons , i would rather test things out for myself to check that they are fine than you lot go , and something happen , that and also i am sure you`ll still need me around because of the terms that are being thrown around , obviously are not familiar , its like having a translator.

Will do another post when i have uploaded my section of the footage to my FTP , so keep an eye out , as for everything else , its looking really great :) , dont forget to keep looking up Free Running and Parkour stuff on Youtube and google to familiarize yourselfs with all of this , and have fun until i get back to you all :)

-Dave Ball

Header v.3 & quick mograph test

Cool, (3 daves! what are the odds?) Here's another revised header, I think it's getting stronger.
I quite like this typeface, it reigns in the overall image and stops it looking too much like a zombie movie poster, it's similar to a lot of type used in skating magazines etc.

New compositor to join the team

Hi all,

Just to let everyone know that following discussions last week with
Adam I have sourced another member to our team to concentrate on the CG
compositing. This will take pressure off of Adam.

The new team member is Dave Bentick, a recent graduate from BA(Hons)
Digital Arts and a graduate from the first graduating cohort from my
own FD.

Dave has a good eye for detail, and to show his talents off here's a
piece of 1st year work he did on my FD. The theme is quite apt:

The video is available here in higher quality.

I've invited him to read this blog to get him up to speed and I am meeting him next Monday. I will use Dave to do the compositing tests from the blue screen work.

Adam can I pick up the footage this week?

Jenny & Dave can you provide me with some footage of a level shot from roughly the same angles that are in Matt's photos. It can be of any level you've built and say about 10-15 secs for each angle.

Any problems with this email me. Can I pick them up by Friday at the latest?

Matt
Good to see where your ideas are going. I'm assessing right now so I'll feedback in more detail later when I can. In the meantime play with the post-apocalyptic tone more. The research you've done so far is good. The more that you immerse yourself in the imagery the more the type decisions will become easier. I'll feedback in more detail later.

Experiments

Slightly shorter version of what I just posted on mine

Typography Experiments

I've left out most of the design speak but thought Dave w might like a look at this bit

///I'm not happy using 'Birth of a Hero' (Not Death of a Hero as I typed yesterday) as the grunge elements are repeated and look cheap so I have been experimenting developing my own.

The 2 fonts I have used are Futura (the condensed one) and Alte Haas Grotesk (the more rounded one). I really like Alte Haas because it's letterforms are big and chunky but the weight keeps it quite light and nice to read, Futura is better for copy rather than 'logo' type.

Screengrab from Illustrator artboard

Alte Haas Grotesk used on header

I think with a bit of tweaking (perhaps a bit too much grit around the letters) this typeface could be developed into an identity for any future design. I think the header may need a bit of a darker background where the type overlaps as the contrast isn't great with the chunkier letters.

Titles/Intro

I had the idea of the stylised lines animating onto the screen with some simple type smoothly 'typing' on, perhaps with some flickery elements to hint at the tense narrative to follow.
I did some quick sketches in photoshop to get an idea of what layouts and type might work with this idea.

I think a contrast
to the main feature would be more appropriate than a crazy action packed title sequence, like I mentioned earlier this will build anticipation which is important in animation (one of Disney's rules), a recent example of the graphics greatly contrasting with the style of the film are the end credits of iron man. (click to watch a clip)

Quick initial ideas

I think the second image in is quite interesting (I used the grungy futura whilst experimenting in Illustrator), and think the plain white type on black probably works the best. Simplicity usually is the key to effective design, so I think I'll stick with the black, white and maybe just a darker grey 'fluid' element.

Oh I also uploaded my Shakespeare typography animation to youtube...

Green Screen Dates

Absolutley brilliant work by all and thanks so much for thursday's session, it really feels like it is coming together. Matt the photos and designs you have made are ace and I will upload some of my pics onto your account - prob tomorrow. What setting did you have your camera on?

Dave here are a couple of dates for the green screen but I would have to check with School before we commit to one. Mon 16th June/ Tue 17th June/ Wed 25th June do any of these seem good for you?

Revised Header

Like Dave said this will change many times through the project incorporating different elements as we develop them, but I think this looks cooler for now, bit grungier to fit the newly realised theme but a bit cleaner aswell. The stylised lines were something I was thinking of for the mograph stuff to tie everything together.

Dave any feedback would be great and then I'll send it to you to actually put up there.

I've had a couple of comments on the photos on the flickr account from the lads so it's good to see them getting involved, don't forget to set up a blog here to throw ideas around on for the narrative etc.

*edit - just found a site with some illustrations of parkour, more on my blog. I'm currently researching any visual representation of parkour and freerunning online as I like to have lots of source material to inspire my work (both good and bad, so I can see what I don't want it to end up like). Anyway even though this is an illo it has an interesting angle and could be useful for storyboard ideas...

[deleted]

I also found a nice, erm, poem?
maybe something like this could be used in the titles to set the scene and anticipation (found this on deviantart, just going back cos there were a lot of images - again, will post more on my blog if anyone's interested)

How to explain, for one who doesn't know
Who hasn't experienced the way,
The life of a traceur, the path of silence

We move where others dare not go
Across rooftops and through dark alleys

Being fluid as water, always preserving the flow
Leaping, Climbing, Vaulting
All tools of the art used to craft the masterpiece

That one run, where everything fits
Each landing precise, every gap cleared

This is the goal of traceurs everywhere
To move swiftly and with purpose
No tricks, no flash, that is not the way

Glory is not to be found
Money is not to be made

However, one can find peace of mind
For every obstacle becomes conquerable
Nothing stands in the way of a traceur

**edit again - just uploaded a whole mess of images to the flickr account grabbed from deviantart (which means they range from pretty cool to pretty grim, but they all help)

Ideas are flying…

Well done team so far. I like the ideas, the energy and the dedication.

As for feedback…

Matt

rough visual styles for any print/web presentation
We can discuss this soon. I think it is a good idea so to lead towards this outcone begin with the header

the header
Have another go at the header now you have the theme and shots to work with. We can change the blog header many times as we like until the movie is done. Each iteration of the design can then be archived on your blog

motion graphics sequence for an introduction like introducing the theory and ideas behind parkour/freerunning,
I like this suggestion. Do some tests. The tests could help the tone and aesthetics of the final video.

Dave/Jen

Illustrations
Great atmospheric shots. I love the fiery red burning sky.

Narrative
Sounds like a good starting point to me. Do the team a favour and copy and paste that part of your post into a new post so it's easier to find and read.

Great so far. Let's see some jpgs of mockups posted. Visual is best.

I'm proud of you guys! Stas and Paul will be told :-)

Flickr photos & yesterday

My turn :)

Really enjoyed yesterday, good to meet everyone and has got loads more ideas buzzing round my head now I have a better understanding of where the project is heading.

I've just set up a Flickr account, rather than have everyone sign up to yahoo, create their own flickr account and add me as a friend, you might as well all just have the username and password to access and add photos if you wish.
Jo if you haven't already uploaded yours maybe you could put them there so all the images are in the same place?
If you have accounts or can be bothered creating one feel free to add me, although I have no clue how you'd go about it.
(Despite the account name it's not my personal account, and the hotmail used to set it up isn't my proper one either, would have called the account something else if I had of known how awkward it is to share privately...)

www.flickr.com

account name: deleted
password: deleted

For obvious reasons I didn't want to just make it a public account even if the link would only be posted here.

Following Dave's post, I think the narrative is cool and the visuals are great, there's tonnes of research material to look at for that kind of thing (including every zombie film ever made, most recently I am legend?) Children of men has some good stuff too (although I wouldn't advise watching the film, never really gets anywhere).

I also posted this in a reply comment to him regarding the music, incase anyone missed the subcomments...

The music will have to be another discussion I think, don't forget we can't use copyright music so thats dragonforce out. if they end up wanting fast metal/hardcore (I'm not sold on the power/speed metal thing tbh, I'm not sure it fits) then it's just a case of looking through local (or further afield) unsigned bands on myspace, sending them a message and they'll all probably jump at the chance.

I wouldn't get blinkered by rock/metal though, as although it's not my cup of tea some pumped up adrenaline electro would really fit also (better still, one of those bands who combine the 2!)

I think the first thing I can physically do is just start to generate some more rough visual styles for any print/web presentation and sort out the header now I have a better idea of what the project's about.

The only other ideas I have for the actual video are perhaps to flesh out the main narrative for a dvd or the public view such as some sort of cool motion graphics sequence for an introduction like introducing the theory and ideas behind parkour/freerunning, which I think is quite important to appreciate the whole thing, and describing the purpose of the project.
Also as mentioned by the lads perhaps mix in some plain footage at the beginning/end (to allow for some longer shots) and then perhaps after the main feature and 'making of' documentary to show how the green screen stuff was done and how hard the lads work at their sport.

I recently learned some after effects basics so I could do the introduction and any typography (credits etc.) if needs be to take some of the workload off adam who's going to be editing everything together. Dave's seen my after effects stuff (not much yet) but I'll endeavour to get it up on youtube asap if anyone wants a look. I've been wanting to use the skills I have to do a title sequence actually so hopefully this is a good idea?

*edit - just set up a blog: biennialfreerunnergraphicdesign.blogspot.com

there's nothing on there yet, any work I do I'll post here anyway as it's more for my own use as a journal for the project, feel free to drop in and see what's going on though, and dave w can you add it to the links there >>>>

Cheers, Matt

Enviroment and Narative concept Feedback

Hello all , I thought i would get back to you all after today. Myself and Jen have been thinking about how this could go , and i believe i have a solutuion that will fill all the catagorys that we went over today , thing is , i really need feed back on this and we may need to change things abit obviously , i am just putting it out because i thought heavily on this specifically from the Kids point of view because when i was thinking about the idea , i was thinking how to make it exciting for them and at the same time have the stuff we talked about in it.

Listening to Dragon Force here , and i kinda fitted this all together so i am gonna take you over this and see what i get in the way of feed back, obviously the narative is the kids own idea , but till then i thought i would have my shot at input to see if i could get anything back from them in terms of ideas that myself and Jen could use.

For the Narative concept , i came up with is something similar to this ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCjGvIJzk6k

Just so you know , the video above is from a 3d animated movie based on Final Fantasy 7 a well know , big title for the original Playstation released in 1996 the characters are Sephiroth and Cloud , Cloud is the one with blond hair , and Sephiroth is the one with long silver hair (and also the bad guy)just for reference incase i mention them again and you dont know who is who.

The specific part of the video i am looking at is from 3:21 till 6:07 , the fight inside the building and the surroundings.

The Narative i sorta had was basically what the kids had before , the idea of the Master leading with the apprentice`s following , and it goes like this.

As for the actual look of the buildings , i resorted to looking at these pictures that are copyright to Alexiuss from Deviantart , its right up our alley as to what was said.

&

Those where the kinda things i invisioned for the enviroment aswell as those , here is the Dragon Force music i was listening to aswell as the video to accompany it because i think it suits well with the idea.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-U1vl-hHWzw

Check them out , and put all the stuff i have mentioned together and see what you think , like i said , i hope this fits in , and before anyone asks , i dont mind if its not done , i just wanted to fashion something along the lines to see what feed back we got so far.

-Dave

Recap on today's session

Hi all,

Well done everyone for your time and input today. The energy from everyone was infectious.

Just to summarize everything so that everyone remembers what was said and what to do:

The Concept
A post-apocalyptic chase within an environment devastated through a nuclear war.

The Narrative
The freerunning lads need to devise a story. Think beginning, middle and end. Use the photos that Jo and Matt are going to upload here to piece together to make a simple storyboard.

The Environment
Jenny, Dave and Matt to start PhotoShopping visuals together to begin the conceptualizing the look and feel of the virtual environment. I'll help art direct you. Post your ideas to the blog as you do them for feedback.

Jenny and Dave can you begin to think and plan the possible environment. How big? Internal or external? etc.

The videos
Adam will post the blue screen footage here for everyone's reference. Jo could you do the same? Adam will have the actual footage that the team can look at and use for some tests. These tests are just to aid final compositing and storyboarding.

Storyboarding
Adam and I will need time to do a final storyboard and I'm intending to make an animatic to show everyone how things may work in the final movie. To do this we will need the story idea locked down.

Green screen
We need to book this ASAP so I'll need times of availibilty from Adam and Jo.

Before the day we need moves to be discussed and planned (still allowing time for improvisation on the day). Any props need to be sturdy and painted leaf green. Crash mats will be good. Think about costumes too. This depends upon your story idea.

Schedule
The project schedule we will work to is as follows:

May - 13th June
Story idea
Environment idea
Visual design idea
Compositing tests

Between 16th - 27th June
Green screen shoot

Mid-June - mid-July
Environment building
Mid July
Compositing
Editing
End of July
Output

Availability
The schedule above needs to be locked down. Can all team members inform me of the days thay cannot be available ASAP. I cannot do the 18th and 23rd June, and I'm assessing up to 12th June. Otherwise I'm free so far.

I can't think of anything else right now. Feel free to post anything I've forgotten, or anything you wish to add.

Cheers

wow thats a fantastic insight, it will be so good for the lads from DLS to listen to you and actually think more deeply about what they do.

Dave W...prob best to finish at 4pmish tomorrow, if thats ok as will need to return crash mats to school and they will be finishing early.

See you tomorrow,

Jo

Hey Matt

Hiya Matt , i tried looking for you with Dave and Jen at the presentation , but unfortunately we had problems finding you before the night ended , just thought i would give you and everyone else my understanding of Free Running , as i actually practice it.

Free Running is derived from Parkour , Parkour originally started out from France with David Belle, the basic teaching of Parkour is part martial arts part movement. Parkour is about getting from point A to point B using the least possible energy , and the most fluid movement possible , Parkour contradictory to many peoples opinions does not include flips as they use up way too much energy.

Free Running is Parkours child in a sense , it uses more energy in the moves , and the teaching of Free Running is that when your doing it , you are putting on a show , showing yourself what you can do , and showing the world how you do it , so it uses more style moves and vaults.

As for the theme Free Running has always been classed as a rough anti establishment kinda thing , but its not really , at its core its about over coming your fears , the fears of , Failiure , Unknown , Limitations , and Yourself , the main fear for everyone that does Free Running or Parkour is their self , because your mind constantly tells you not to do certain things because they could result in something bad , like a bail or a broken bone , so its really about the power you need mentally to over come your own mind.

The only other thing about free running is , most people think its reckless but , its actually not , most runners i know including myself actually plan out their moves first , and look at their limits and see how to break them safely before trying them anywhere else , when you do Free Running , its all about how you plan your route , A-B , and what you choose to do along that route to keep yourself entertained , IE moves.

Normally flips are only used in Free Running to show off the runners ability to break their mind limit and do something like a flip , somewhere dangerous like off a wall onto a pavement or something from 4 feet up.

Hope its given you all abit more insight into Free Running.

New blog header (rough)

Hi all, dave w has asked me to design a new blog header to replace the rather uninspiring green squares up there ^^^ so in between sorting through about 500 photos for stock, planting herbs (for cooking!) and eurovision parties (last place, again, at least wogan was on form) I've been reading up a bit on freerunning/parkour (is it 2 things or just have 2 names?) over the bank holiday.

I don't have too much to draw upon except years of skateboarding in my teens, I notice a lot of the photography techniques are similar but am concerned about using the same anti-establishment/rough imagery associated with it because obviously this project is about promoting the activity in the opposite . Does anyone know of any good magazines/websites/dvds/books about freerunning and/or the culture (if it has one as such)?

On the skating note, I just remembered a video I was supposed to post here weeks ago that I sent to dave. Some interesting green(board)screen techniques used in the Girl video Yeah Right that's worth a watch...

http://youtube.com/watch?v=4cPWCaRWe0w

Obviously the best research is first hand so when we get together on thursday I'll have a much better feel about where the project is heading and how everyone feels it should be displayed visually. The first thing that jumped out at me was the connection between free running and flowing water but apart from that I'm pretty much just doodling, so let me know what you think...

Cheers, see you thurs, Matt

Plan D is on

Yes sounds great! Toxteth TV looks good and we have money from the biennial to cover the cost. We can have a chat on thur, after we see what it is we need to do, and then go ahead and book it. Enjoy bank hol!!

RE: Plan C: Thursday Itinerary (proposed)

sounds good to me

(*testing 1 2)

matt

Plan C: Thursday Itinerary (proposed)

Hi all,

I propose we get as much done next Thursday as we can to brainstorm the project. Depending upon availability I propose the following rough outline. Post your comments and I'll then draw up a clearer itinerary for next week.

  • [10:00am] Jo and lads arrive;
  • [10:00 - 10:30] Tour of college and facilities;
  • [11:00 - 12:00] Team meets with Jo and lads in C431 (Adam, Dave, Jenny, Matt and Dexter) for initial brainstorming of ideas;
  • [12:00 - 1:00] Lunch (and maybe research filming of lads going through some freerunning moves outside somewhere?);
  • [1:00 onwards] Video kids against blue screen.

What does everyone think?

Plan D: Toxteth TV Green Screen

Yo all!

I'm just been to Toxteth TV to recce their green screen facility. It is on par with the (current) TV studio at College. Check out the >shaky< vids below. There is a green carpet, which could cover crash mats, and we can bring props if we paint them leaf green.

Toxteth TV green screen

Toxteth TV lighting system

The cost of the studio with a technician is normally £250 per day + vat for 8 hours, but this could reduce this cost to £175 + vat. That's for 8 hours of access.

Adam I have the technician's contact details if you wish to talk to her.

We can discuss options on Thursday but so far they are free between 16th and the 30th June. Right in the timeframe I have in mind.

Plan B: ICDC Green Screen

Hi Jo, Adam et al,

I've just been to ICDC (International Centre for Digital Content) to see their green screen room. It is bigger than I initially imagined. My contact Mark Smith estimates it to be "green screen is about 2.8m high 6m wide and curves to the floor with about 2-3 m of floor". Check out the video I took (ok it is shaky).

Adam what is your thoughts on the facility?

Ian Bradley, who showed me around thinks it is free-ish in June and it is free. I need to check with Mark about availability.

ICDC has their degree show next Wednesday. I have invites for everyone on the team. ICDC is on Edge Lane in Liverpool in Liverpool Digital (straight down the M62 or the 7 bus from the city centre). You could then check out the facility. Let me know who wants to go.

Wednesday, 21 May 2008

Plan C update

Hi Jo,

10:00am is fine next Thursday. Go to student services, ring me and I'll give you all a tour. I need to check with Adam what time he is available.

If we use the College's blue screen further we will need to begin earlier in June. The whole floor with the TV studio on it is to be closed from the 20th for renovation over the summer.

I'll ask Toxteth TV if I can pay a visit on Friday to recce the facility.

Adam can you check the blue screen in college this week? I'll try myself but you know more. I'm thinking about props that can be used and if we need to paint anything blue? If so what colour blue?
